Boatman Patterson now holds leadership position at national organization for state housing agencies

October 22 , 2018

SACRAMENTO — California Housing Finance Agency (CalHFA) Executive Director Tia Boatman Patterson was elected President of the Board of Directors of the National Council of State Housing Agencies (NCSHA) last week at the organization’s Annual Conference.

Boatman Patterson was voted in by Executive Directors of NCSHA'1111s member organizations — the nation’s State Housing Finance Agencies.

"I'm honored to take on this leadership role at a critical time for affordable housing in our country," Boatman Patterson said. "As President, it is my goal that the Board support our Executive Director Stockton Williams and his staff as they continue to expand NCSHA's national influence to advocate for policies and programs that will provide safe and affordable housing to those in need."

Since being appointed CalHFA’s Executive Director by Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. in 2014, Boatman Patterson quickly became an active participant in NCSHA. She was first elected to the organization’s Board of Directors in 2015, then voted in for a second two-year term in 2017. After each of those elections, the Board members selected her to be an At-Large Member of its Executive Committee.

Boatman Patterson has gained knowledge of the affordable housing landscape from a variety of perspectives during her long career, which has included working as a housing consultant in the California State Legislature, General Counsel for the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency and as an affordable housing lawyer in the private sector, before taking the leading role at CalHFA, the state’s affordable housing lender.

Throughout this time, she has extolled the value of working together, and it is that collaborative spirit that Boatman Patterson will bring to her role as NCSHA Board President.

"I know the power of partnerships, as it is increased collaboration that has played a large role in CalHFA’s resurgence in the past half-decade," Boatman Patterson said. "Along that same line, I will bring together and give a voice to every one of NCSHA’s members from across the country, as well as push for heightened collaboration with the organization’s federal, local and private partners."

In addition to Boatman Patterson, the other newly elected NCSHA Board officers are Vice President Scott Spivey (Mississippi Home Corporation), Secretary/Treasurer Barbara Fields (Rhode Island Housing) and At-Large Member Anas Bern Addi (Delaware State Housing Authority).

"NCSHA’s newly-elected officers and Board members are a remarkable group of public servants from a diverse set of states that are representative of the country and its housing challenges as a whole," Williams said in an NCSHA news release. "Under their leadership, NCSHA will continue to bring forward solutions to housing affordability challenges that are based on the proven, scalable approaches of state HFAs.

Also at the conference, CalHFA Board Member Tiena Johnson Hall was elected Second Vice President of the Board of Directors for the National Conference of State Housing Boards. Johnson Hall was previously the NCSHB Board Secretary.
